Happy Halloween!!!
I have to admit something...I adore Halloween. Shamelessly. I decorate my house with autumn leaves, scarecrows, pumpkins and a million candles. (Fairly tasteful, though; what would Martha do?) I spend two weeks baking all sorts of treats. I watch "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" I usually spend hours working on a costume for a party.
It's such a fun day. Kids are beside themselves with excitement, and adults (even the adults that think they're too old for it) get caught up in it, too, and find themselves singing along to "The Monster Mash" and eating orange cupcakes at the office.
For the past couple of weeks, from time to time the little girl downstairs will suddenly start jumping around and shouting, "It's almost Halloween!!! It's almost here!!!" I can empathize.
Chad's mother bought pumpkins for everyone in their family (and me), and insisted that we have a carving contest. Gone are the days of triangle eyes and crooked mouths...she had bought stencils, and even the 7-year-old was making really beautiful creations. My pumpkin had Tinkerbelle on it; what better way to bring in the holiday than a little magic and pixie dust?
I think the beauty of the season has a lot to do with my love of the holiday, as well. Crisp nights lit by candles, days marked by the ritual of pulling out wooly sweaters, unworn through the summer.
Indeed, the frost is on the pumpkin, all's right with the world.
